Мороз и солнце; день чудесный!
Еще ты дремлешь, друг прелестный —
Пора, красавица, проснись:
Открой сомкнуты негой взоры
Навстречу северной Авроры,
Звездою севера явись!
Эти строки Пушкинского “Зимнего утра” приходят на ум, когда январским утром снег сияет на солнце и небо такое голубое, что на него больно смотреть! Я мечтаю о снеге, о зимней Москве, об этом особенном запахе зимы (только это написала, подхватила корона-вирус и сейчас не чувствую даже запах бензина 😢 !), о счастье зайти с мороза в тёплый дом.
Можете себе представить это чувство тепла и комфорта, когда на улице – 25°С, а в квартире + 25°С. (разница температур в 50 градусов!)
Да-да, русские люди НЕ НОСЯТ ДОМА шерстяной свитер и тёплые носки, как в Нидерландах. И НЕ СТАВЯТ охлаждаться пудинг под кровать в спальне (вместо холодильника), как в Англии!
Конечно, есть шанс, что благодаря глобальному потеплению многим придётся забыть, что такое “снег” и “мороз”: в прошлом году в январе я так не увидела снега ни в Москве, ни в Санкт-Петербурге!
Зато в Новом Селе, под Вязьмой Смоленской области наша машина застряла в снегу так, что пришлось вызывать трактор! Кстати, именно здешние морозы заставили Наполеоновскую армию бросить всё награбленное и бежать домой без оглядки! Говорят, сокровища и до сих пор лежат на дне маленького озера, недалеко от деревни, где живут мои родственники. Местные жители ищут-ищут, но пока не нашли. (Вы можете тоже поискать, если хотите. Вдруг вам повезёт?).
А на полярном севере, в городе Воркуте, где я родилась, уже сейчас -20С! Кстати, мой ученик Кеес каждый год зимой проводит на русском севере пару месяцев, живёт в чуме, ест сырую замороженную рыбу и ездит на оленях! Он даже написал книгу о жизни северного народа Коми (и об этом я ещё напишу потом, отдельно и много!)

- Сказка “Морозко” (с англ. субтитрами). Дед Мороз не дарит подарков плохим детям!

На что посмотреть?
- На зимние пейзажи русских художников и пройти ТЕСТ о зимних картинах.
- “Новогодний календарь” интернет-портала Культура РФ.
Что послушать?
- Чайковский. “Щелкунчик” (и посмотреть): Большой театр или Мариинский театр
- Римский-Корсаков Опера “Снегурочка”.
- Рождественские песнопения Православной церкви. Мужской хор “Валаам”.
- “50 новогодних хитов 2020” на любой вкус для любителей поп-музыки.
Где побывать? (Эх, корона-корона! Ну, хотя бы виртуально)
- Русские Православные Монастыри и церкви. Зима, солнце на куполах, снежные равнины кругом – абсолютно незабываемые картины и ЭМОЦИИ, которые вы встретите только в России.
- Русская баня. Встретить первое января в московских банях “Сандуны”, это такая же классика, как окунуться в Северное море в Гааге во время “Nieuwjaarsduik”, но только на 99 градусов теплее!
- На бульварах старой Москвы. Это сказочное сияние не только влюбляет в Москву всех без исключения туристов, но и помогает москвичам не впасть в “зимнюю спячку”.

Что носить?
Всё самое тёплое: шубу, платок или шапку, шарф, тёплые носки, валенки и рукавички! Чем теплее, тем лучше! Если вы думаете, что валенки – это для туристов, то вы ошибаетесь! Без них в русской деревне никак нельзя! Но, если вы собираетесь в Москву, особенно в Московское метро (вы во всём этом просто сваритесь! Там даже зимой жара!) вам придётся всё это снять! (Кстати, московский ресторан “Валенок” очень неплох! )
Что есть и что пить?
- Есть: “Оливье” и “Селёдку под шубой”, соленья, варенья, печенье, супы и пироги! Здесь, на моём любимом кулинарном сайте “Афиша. Еда” вы всё это найдёте!
- Пить.: кроме банального вина, водки и пива, морсы, травяные чаи, крепкие и сладкие ягодные наливки и настойки
(не спрашивайте меня, чем они отличаются!)! Словом, всё, что может согреть душу и тело зимними вечерами. Всё, кроме кваса! Квас только летом. А до лета ещё далеко!

А давайте поднимем тост за лето! Чтобы летом 2021 всё было как раньше! Чтобы НИКТО НЕ БОЛЕЛ ковид! Чтобы мы опять могли чувствовать все ПРЕКРАСНЫЕ (и ужасные) ЗАПАХИ вокруг; чтобы всё, что было позитивным снова стало ПОЗИТИВНЫМ! Чтобы бы мы снова могли ПУТЕШЕСТВОВАТЬ и видеть русскую зиму не только на полотнах художников, но и в реальности! Чтобы мы могли опять встречаться, ЦЕЛОВАТЬСЯ и ОБНИМАТЬСЯ! Чтобы у всех, на каждом столе была ЕДА и ПИТЬЁ! И чтобы жители Нового Села, наконец -то, нашли клад Наполеона! ЗА ЛЕТО 2021!

Cold frost and sunshine: day of wonder!
But you, my friend, are still in slumber –
Wake up, my beauty, time belies:
Your dormant eyes, I beg you, broaden
Towards the northerly Aurora,
As though a northern star arose!
These Pushkin’s words should come to mind whenever you wake up and see the snow shining in the sun outside and the sky is so bright you can hardly look at it.
I dream about snow, about Moscow in white, about all smells of winter: cold air, Christmas trees, mandarins, pastry, and latte macchiato.… (OMG! I started this post a couple of days ago, now I caught the coronavirus and could not even smell gasoline!😢 ). And let’s not forget about one last thing: coming into a warm house from the outside frosty streets!
Can you already imagine those feelings of happiness, coziness and comfort, coming from -25°С outside into + 25°С indoors? (a fifty-degree difference!)
Yes, you should experience it yourself, believe me. Russians don’t wear a woolen sweater at home like here in The Netherlands. And Russians don’t cool off their Christmas puddings under the master bed (instead of the fridge) like in Britain!
Of course, there is a chance a lot of us will not know anymore what real snow and real frost are because of the changes in climate. E.g., last January I did not see any snow in Moscow, or in Saint-Petersburg!
But in the Novoye Selo in Smolensk region this certainly has compensated it for the full 100%: our car got stuck in mountains of snow and we had to find a neighbouring tractor to help out of it! By the way, it was in this specific area where Napoleon’s troops in 1812 ran home without looking back, leaving all stolen treasures behind, because of a desperately cold winter! Rumor says they have thrown all into a nearby small lake not far from the place where my mum’s family lives. Up until now locals are still looking for the treasures but still did succeed. (You are very welcome to persue your own search in that locality..!)
At the same time, in the utmost north of Russia, in the polar town of Vorkuta where I was born, now it has cooled down to -20°С! One of my students, Kees, visits the area every year for a couple of months, where he lives in chum, drives deers carriages (like Santa!), and eats frozen raw fish (don’t try this at home..)! Even more, he has written a book about the life of Komi, a Russian folk who have their origins in the North (but let’s talk about it later; later and a lot!)

What to visit? (Oh, at least, visit virtually)
- Russian Orthodox Convents and Churches. Anywhere in Russia. Winter, sun rays on church domes, empty snow plains for kilometers around – there are unforgettable pictures and NEW EMOTIONS you would never find in any other place in the world.
- Russian banja. (Russian sauna) To find yourself on the 1st of January in Moscow banjas “Sanduny” is about the same as diving in the North Sea on the Beach of Scheveningen the same day. But 99°C warmer!
- The boulevards of the old Moscow center. Fabulous winter brilliance not only makes all tourists fall in love with Moscow but it also helps Muscovites not to get into depression or fall in a long winter sleep.

What to wear?
- A very warm coat, angora goat shawl, seriously warm socks, and handmade mittens. The warmer, the better. Do not forget the VALENKI! Look at me (foto in the Russian version). Do you think Valenki is a kind of tourist attraction? You are not right. One will not survive in the Russian countryside without it! But if you are going to spend some days in Moscow, especially in Moscow metro (there is too warm even in the winter!), you should take all these off! (by the way, Moscow restaurant “Valenok” is very very good!)
What to eat and what to drink?
- To eat: salads Olivier (Russian Potato Salad) and Herring under the Fur Coat; all kinds of pickles and marinades, jams and confitures, cakes, soup, and pie! Here, in my favorite site Афиша – Еда, you will find all possible recipes from Russian cuisine.
- To drink: apart from the more common wine, beer, and vodka, strong sweet and semi-sweet liqueurs and tinctures from berries and fruits; non-alcoholic cranberry, and cowberry drinks, juices, and all possible types of herbal thee! Actually, during the Russian winter, you will enjoy everything that keeps your body and soul warm and happy. Besides kvass, probably. Yes, we do not drink kvass in winter, it is merely a summer drink! It also would not make you warm and happy in winter anyway. And summer is still a long way ahead!
So let’s drink for the 2021 SUMMER!
Let the summer 2021 be like it was before. Lets wish nobody gets the covid virus! And let us experience all amazing (and even worse) smells again! Let’s make all POSITIVE things just POSITIVE again! Let us travel, take pictures, look at Russian winter in reality and not only from paintings! Let us meet, KISS, and CUDDLE! Give all needy people food to eat and clothes to wear! And, please, let the people of the Smolensk region find “the Napoleon treasures”!
